TD-SCDMA Update
January 12, 2007
- In addition to the six co-hosting Olympic cities of Tianjin, Shanghai, Qingdao, Qinhuangdao, Shenyang, and Hong Kong, China Mobile has extended its TD-SCDMA network construction to include the cities of Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

- Results of the third-phase TD-SCDMA testing in China have been revealed. Of the three Chinese domestic equipment providers, ZTE emerged as the best, with TD Tech and Datang trailing behind.

- Four TD-SCDMA-related items gained support from the Chinese government and were included in the official Electron Information Industry Development Fund Item Guideline. The four items are the R&D and industrialization of embedded operation system for TD- SCDMA intelligent phones, the industrialization of TD-SCDMA hardcore technologies and terminal products, the R&D and industrialization of HSDPA products, and the development of general mobile phone test system. ZTE received funding from the last three items.

- Carlos M. Gutierrez, Secretary of the US Department of Commerce, criticized China for not embracing global 3G mobile communications standards. Gutierrez attributed China's delay in 3G licensing to China's intention to promote its homegrown TD-SCDMA standard, a move that impeded global technology innovation.
